After two all around lackluster performances that resulted in their first two game losing streak since two seasons ago, STS needed a good game to get their confidence back, as well as get back in the “C” Division playoff race. All that was accomplished with an 11 to 7 win over Leo Baeck on a morning that started out dark and rainy and ended with blue sunny skies. Leo Baeck got off to a fast start in a steady rain/drizzle by getting to STS’s Peter Gold for 4 runs in the top of the 1st on some solid hits. Gold stated later that it was difficult to control the movement of the wet ball. The trait that typified last season’s championship was STS’s ability to bounce back from deficits. That trait was on display early in this game as STS collected 6 runs on 6 hits in their half of the 1st to take a 6-4 lead. The inning was highlighted by three consecutive RBI hits by Brent Merritt, Dan Latter and a 2 run homer by Bradley Rosenblum. After the inclement weather passed following the 2nd inning, STS came back with another big inning in the 3rd, highlighted once again by RBI hits from Bradley and Dan. Josh Enbom, Raffy Estrada, and Doug Irvine also chipped in with 3rd inning RBI. Following the 4 run 1st inning, Gold settled down by only surrendering single runs in the 3rd, 6th, and 7th innings, but he was helped along the way by some stellar play in the outfield as well as a great diving, sprawling play at SS by Howard Schwartz who was able to throw a runner out at 2B while laying flat on his stomach. Note that this was about the 4th or 5th spectacular defensive play that Howard has had at SS this season. His glove has been sizzlin’!!!! So on a day that threatened to be a complete wash-out and started out dark and raining for STS, ended with bright sunshine along with a win – STS 11 Leo Baeck 7.
