Today was the continuation of a brewing rivalry that began last year culminating with STS ending Temple Emanuel’s perfect season in the “C” Division Championship game. That was after Emanuel handed STS their only two non-forfeited defeats of last season. This latest addition of the rivalry was the most exciting yet, going down to the final inning.

The game began with STS accepting a gift of 2 unearned runs in the top of the 1st. However, being the generous bunch that they are, STS gave them right back in the bottom half of the 1st with Emanuel taking a 3 to 2 lead. Single runs in the 2nd and 3rd increased Emanuel’s lead to 5 to 2 with their pitcher Lou Rutzkie keeping STS off balance and off the bases as he recorded 0’s on the scoreboard from the 2nd through the 6th innings, not allowing an earned run in the game going into the 7th. However as the saying goes, “It ain’t over ‘till it’s over” and somehow STS found their hitting shoes just in the nick of time in the top of the 7th. Heather Shickman legged out an infield hit to start the rally. Doug Irvine singled her to 2nd. After a force out at 3rd, Marc Grossmann delivered a huge 2 run triple to close the gap to 5 to 4, with 1 out. Mark Miller was then HBP. With runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, Howard Schwartz delivered the next key extra base hit of the inning, a 2-run gap double to left center which gave STS the lead for the first time (6 to 5) since the top of the 1st. Alex Rosenblum then singled Howard to 3rd, but Howard strayed too far off the bag and was caught in a pickle for the 2nd out of the inning. At the time with only a one run lead and knowing that Emanuel had an explosive offense that could erupt at anytime, that out could have been huge, slowing down a possible bigger inning. However, with Alex; who advanced during the pickle, on 2nd and 2 outs, Dan Latter came through with the 3rd and final big hit of STS’s 7th inning with a clean single to drive in their 5th run of the inning to make the score 7 to 5 going into the bottom of the 7th. After allowing an earned run in each of the first 3 innings, STS’s Peter Gold matched Emanuel’s Rutzkie pitch-for-pitch and blanking them from the 4th inning on going into the 7th. Emanuel’s first batter in the 7th shot a sinking liner to left that the sure-handed Marc Grossmann picked off the grass for the first out. After a ground out, the final out was recorded in fitting fashion; for what has become a great series, with a screaming line drive right back through the middle. However, with his life flashing before him and about 90% luck and 10% skill, Gold moved his head to one side, stuck his 13 ¾ inch glove in the air and the ball found it as it was passing by…….. and it stuck. Final score – with a 7th inning comeback, STS – 7 Temple Emanuel – 5.We can’t wait for what the next chapter of this budding rivalry will bring.
