On March 22, TAS’ Bagel Dawgs lost a late lead and went down to defeat for the fourth time in five weeks. Five games later, the Dawgs have not lost again. From being tied with three other teams for fifth place, TAS is now tied with one or two other teams for first place. But the Dawgs cannot and will not grow complacent, as a playoff berth is far from assured. Today’s wins by TAS and the Aliyah A’s set the stage for their showdown on 5/17 in what will then be their biggest game of the season, the Dawgs having narrowly defeated the A’s in a game played months ago.

As for today, victory over Temple Beth Ami would prove a bigger challenge than when the teams met just two weeks earlier because TBA’s ace righty Scott was back on the hill for the much improved squad from up north. Once again, TAS broke on top, scoring 2 in the bottom of the 2nd. The 3rd was a classic Bagel Dawg “we win and lose as a team” inning, as the 8-12 hitters contributed four singles to start what turned into a 7 run inning good for a 9-0 lead. TBA got 3 in the top of the 3rd and another 2 in the top of the 5th to cut the lead to 9-5. Things would have been better for the Bagel Dawgs if they had been able to force out two runners at the plate, but it was not meant to be. However, things would have been far worse for the Dawgs if LF Scott Newman had not thrown out yet another runner (this time at 3B on a nice tag by Gregg “Gimpy” Garfinkel) and 3B Garfinkel had not contributed a mountain of assists [8, 9, 10?] and started the rally-killing 5-3 double play that finally quelled the big TBA uprising. TAS struck one last time in the bottom of the 5th, as Eric Greenwald laced a two-out two-run single down the line after Newman had been walked intentionally. TBA must have thought your author was instead on deck, as that was the third hit for Greenwald, a perfect 3-3 on the day, as were P Sam Levin, who smacked a pair of doubles and was again brilliant on the mound, and Pat Napolitano, who also scored 3 runs. 11 of 12 Dawgs contributed a hit and 9 of them scored a run.

We REALLY don’t want to take the next two weeks off.

You’d think that in such a long-winded report, I would not overlook something important, BUT NO. Pitching and defense wins titles. TAS’ starting pitchers (Levin and Grove) have given up 6 runs or less in each of its last 5 games. And the Dawgs D has repeatedly executed, cutting down runners committing baserunning mistakes that they otherwise often get away with. Yesterday, with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, on the hideous and deceptive field that is Winnetka #2, LCF Adam Rosen raced in to snare a line drive and fired a bullet to heady 2B Gordon Recht, sneaking in behind a runner who mistakenly strayed too far from the bag. Double play, threat averted. Final score TAS 11, TBA 6. Assist, Fogel.
