Just over three months ago, the TAS Bagel Dawgs and Aliyah A’s fought a bitterly – and I do mean BITTERLY – contested game that had lawyers for each team asking for larger retainers. In the end, the Dawgs triumphed by a narrow margin. We sense the A’s – with many of whom, particularly those who play summer ball, the Dawgs are in fact quite friendly – had been looking forward to the rematch and their chance to exact revenge, as well as reclaim the first tiebreaker. By the time the appointed day arrived, the game had taken on added significance as the teams were tied for the C-Division lead.
The Dawgs scored first, plating 4 in the top of the 2nd as Art “Home Run” Hirsch returned from a long stint on the DL in dramatic fashion with a three-run homer to deep RCF. The A’s came right back in the bottom of the inning, stringing together a series of base hits to knot the score at 4. Both teams scored single runs in the 3rd and the Dawgs one in the top of the 4th, making the score 6-5. The A’s then strung together an even more remarkable series of well-placed base hits and scored an impressive 6 runs and take an 11-6 lead. The Dawgs were undaunted, however; Hirsch lead off the 5th with a single and Frank Rehhaut followed with another long bomb to deep RF; the Dawgs would score three more times to tie it up at 11-11. The Dawgs would not score again and the A’s had home field advantage.
After being shut out in the 5th and 6th innings, the A’s came to bat in the bottom of the 7th needing only one run to win and their lead-off man up. SS Glen Schecter made a brilliant stab of a ground ball up the middle, firing a strike to 1B to record an out. The next two A’s singled, putting runners at first and third with only one out, the winning run just 60 tantalizing feet from home. Manager Phil Grove called for the intentional walk, setting up a force play at the plate, and brought his outfield way in. In one of the most memorable moments in TAS softball history, Sudden Sam Levin struck out the next batter to record the second out. Levin then induced a routine fly ball out to end the game, perhaps the greatest tie we have ever played.
Pitching and defense continue to be the foundation of success. 2B Scott Fogel made two critical run-saving/rally-killing plays ranging far to his left, and also continued his torrid hitting, joining Hirsch in going a perfect 3-3. It was truly another team effort as the 11 runs were scored by 10 different Dawgs.
On a serious note, the TAS family mourns the tragic passing of 10 year old Alexa Weiner, daughter of Anthony and Denise and sister of Carson, who bravely battled brain cancer for more than half of her much too short life. We shed a tear for Alexa and pray her family finds solace, knowing her memory is a blessing to all who knew her. We must count ourselves lucky every day our children wake up healthy, and kiss them goodnight grateful that they have not suffered as poor sweet little Alexa did.
